You will never go thirsty in Japan. Beverage machines are located every 2-3 blocks all over the country. You can get basic cold beverages such as water, tea, juice and soda as well as hot beverages such as coffee and tea all from the same machine. This past winter, I even saw hot corn soup in a can.
Directly across the street from our apartment building are some beer and sake machines and non-alcoholic beverage machines. We don’t have to go very far to get a beer. The only thing I have to remember is that it shuts down at 11pm. Life is hard.
